Dr Adama Traoré named Interim Director General of AfricaRice
The Board of Trustees of the Africa Rice Center(AfricaRice) has appointed former Board member and Vice-Chair Dr Adama Traoré as Interim Director General with effect from 12 September 2013. It has also put in place procedures to initiate immediately the selection process for recruiting a new Director General.
The announcement was made by the Board at the end of its meeting in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, 3-5 September 2013, in view of the imminent departure of the current Director General Dr Papa Abdoulaye Seck, who has been nominated by the President of Senegal as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Equipment.
“Dr Traoré has a wealth of scientific and leadership experience that will help the AfricaRice Management and staff to maintain the momentum and continue the legacy of excellence established by Dr Seck,” said Dr Peter Matlon, Board Chair.
A Malian national, Dr Traoré was President and Executive Secretary of the National Committee on Agricultural Research (CNRA) of Mali. He was Chair of the West and Central African Council for Agricultural Research and Development (CORAF/WECARD), and Vice-Chair of the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA).
He has also been on the Boards of several international Centers that are members of the CGIAR Consortium – International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and AfricaRice.

Le Conseil d’administration du Centre du riz pour l’Afrique (AfricaRice) a nommé un ancien membre et vice-président du Conseil d’administration, Dr Adama Traoré Directeur général par intérim avec effet à compter du 12 septembre 2013. Parallèlement, le Conseil d’administration a mis en place des procédures pour initier immédiatement le processus de sélection en vue du recrutement d’un nouveau Directeur général.
L’annonce a été faite par le Conseil d’administration à la fin de sa réunion à Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, 3-5 septembre 2013, vu le départ imminent de l’actuel Directeur général Dr Papa Abdoulaye Seck, qui a été nommé par le président du Sénégal comme ministre de l’Agriculture et de l’Équipement rural.
« Dr Traoré possède une solide expérience dans les domaines de la science et du leadership qui contribuera à aider le Management et le personnel d’AfricaRice à maintenir son élan et à perpétuer l’héritage d’excellence établi par Dr Seck », a affirmé Dr Peter Matlon, président du Conseil d’administration.
Dr Traoré de nationalité malienne a été président et Secrétaire exécutif du Comité national de la recherche agricole (CNRA) du Mali. Il a été président du Conseil ouest et centre africain pour la recherche et le développement agricoles (CORAF/WECARD), et vice-président de Forum pour la recherche agricole en Afrique (FARA).
Il a également siégé aux Conseils d’administration de plusieurs Centres internationaux qui sont membres du Consortium du CGIAR – Institut international de recherche sur les cultures des zones tropicales semi-arides (ICRISAT), Institut international d’agriculture tropicale (IITA) et AfricaRice.
